Discover something unexpected

Surprise returns available content associated with a randomly selected keyword. It helps users discover content without needing to choose a category or configure a recommendation list manually.

You can use it to create experiences such as “Surprise me” or “Discover something new.”

How it works

For each request, Rumo randomly selects an eligible keyword and its category, then returns available content matching that keyword. A keyword is eligible when it is associated with at least 20 items in the catalog.

The matching content is also randomized, so repeated requests could eventually return the same keyword but different items. The response includes the selected keyword and category, which you can use to explain the recommendation.

Surprise returns 30 items by default though this can be customized. If fewer matching items are available, Rumo returns those items without selecting another keyword.

Good to know

Only available content is returned.

The same keyword can be selected again on a later request.

If no eligible keyword can be selected, Rumo returns the configured fallback list if one is provided. If no fallback list is available, it returns an empty list.
